Coaches are invaluable in the development of an athlete’s skills.  They are teachers and mentors for the thousands of young athletes they interact with in their day-to-day work.  They work not only with athletes but also the athlete’s parents in setting realistic goals and the training required to reach their potential and their goals.  All Skate Canada coaches are required to be trained and/or certified in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Kelly Van Buren

Kelly is our head coach for KidSkate & CanSkate programs.  She is a Level 2 NCCP Certified Coach with Level 3 NCCP Certification in General Subjects and Theory.   She has her Sports Injury & Prevention Certificate from DurhamCollege, First Aid and CPR, and has received her Freeskate and Dance Evaluator Certificates. Kelly has over 12 years experience coaching, and has most recently taught Synchronized skating.  Kelly thoroughly enjoys coaching and watching the younger kid’s progress throughout their skating season!

Heather Boyd

This is Heather’s third year coaching KidSkate & CanSkate with Kelly.  She is a Level 1 NCCP Certified Instructor.  She began skating at Newcastle Skating club at 3 years old, and continued skating there until leaving for University.  Heather enjoys coaching & introducing her love of skating, which allows the opportunity to build good foundations in young skaters by helping them to achieve greatness. She believes that you must have solid foundation in order to become a great skater, and the way to achieve this is to start with emphasizing the basics at a young age. Heather believes it is equally important that the coach show the skaters that although you must work hard, you should always remember to enjoy the sport!

Beth Garland

Beth is a Level 3 NCCP Certified Coach.  She has 22 years of experience with Learn-to Skate up to StarSkate & Competitive skating levels.  She coaches both recreational and competitive skaters, with many skaters attaining gold tests before their skating careers end.  Beth has had many competitive skaters work up to the Junior Competitive level and a few go on to higher levels at bigger centers.  She has been skating since she was 7 years old, attaining her 6th figure, Gold dances and Gold Freeskate.  Beth states that “there is no place that she would rather be” than coaching and being on the ice!

Celina Kosmala

This is Celina’s second year coaching with the Cobourg Figure Skating Club.  Celina is a CanSkate Certified and StarSkate trained coach, having experience with skaters of all ages and abilities.
